Don’t Be Anyone But Yourself.

Perhaps as someone who hasn’t published much except a few things online, I don’t have much of a say in this. However, it seems to me that the writers who excelled are the ones who didn’t try to be anyone but themselves. They may have been inspired by other authors, even borrowing some things from their style. In the end, their stories were still their own.

I tried so long to be like J.R.R. Tolkien and Charles Dickens and C.S. Lewis. It was all a failure, really, because I wasn’t reaching my true potential. My potential is not reached in trying to be someone else. I am not someone else. I am me. I write very distinctly and definitely with intensive detail. While I may be inspired by other authors, I cannot allow their styles to overshadow my own.

Maybe I’m going too far with this, but I don’t think I could be more insulted than being told I am the next version of an old author. I do not want to be the next C.S. Lewis, although I love C.S. Lewis. I don’t mind it being said that I write like a certain person. I have someone who I write somewhat like. I am fully aware that we have similar styles, and we’re actually good friends.

(This would be the fantastic Caitlin E. Jones that I am referring to, by the way. She is currently writing Chimehour, an excellent Gaslamp Fantasy.)

Still, our stories and content are very different, and I think both would be happy to say that we’re different.

Don’t try to be the next J.R.R. Tolkien or Emily Dickenson or Ernest Hemingway or Robert Frost. They’re all dead. Just try to be you, and you’re already on your way to greatness.

They’re all dead. Just try to be you, and you’re already on your way to greatness.

Just try to be you, and you’re already on your way to greatness.

SO CLOSE TO 100!

Less than twenty followers away from hitting 100! For those who are just checkin’ this blog out, I’m a writer who’s currently working on a dark fantasy/steampunk series. So I post occasional stuff about that, writing tips, book reviews (very occasionally) and fandom stuff. So, yeah! Check us out and give a follow if you’re interested!

Why YOU Should Follow

Why I think you’re all going to love the Dark Veil Saga by the very first book:

 – an antagonist who isn’t aware he’s the villain, and might not be,

 – local plot, because teenager-saves-the-world is getting obnoxious,

 – non-white and mentally ill protagonist,

 – lots of original fantasy creatures,

 – giant freaking swords, because some tropes ARE worth keeping,

 – no glorifying of war/death,

 – unusual and original magic system,

 – mix of Steampunk and Viking culture,

 – near equal antagonist/protagonist point-of-view,

 – and faeries are actually cool.

I’m sure I’ll think of more as time goes on, but that’s just for starters. This book was basically made to break what annoyed me about the entire fantasy genre. But you’ll hear more about it if you follow me on Tumblr or give us a like on Facebook. The first book, Dark Soldier, is planned for release in early 2016.

We are similar – we were molded by the night around us… I love the night. But you and I, we feel it differently. I feel the moon’s power pulling the ocean sands. I feel vibrations in the dirt and the grass growing in the moonlight. I feel the trees swaying in the wind and the earth rolling under our feet. Everything is moving. And now I want you to move with me.

Dark Soldier, a novel coming Spring 2016.

In the Morning

The sun has come to rest;

The day has all but ended.

And laughter speaks of zest

And spring’s last day impended.

Furniture fills the hall

As my hall mates start to clean,

And talk of the next fall

And the year that had just been.

The rooms look so empty

As college boys come and go

And say with somber glee,

“See you next semester, bro.”

But while spring’s end can’t be glummer,

In the morning starts the summer.

For those who do not know what this blog is about, I’m currently writing a fantasy novel while in college. No, not a short story, not novella… novel. So my life is basically a mixture of me writing an epic fantasy whilst balancing friendships and learning things about how to live.

in this blog, I write news about the book, poetry, and writing wisdom I have earned through lots of trial and error. (Yes, I use the Oxford comma. The Oxford comma trumps all.) I’ll be posting more college stories soon as well. That was the original intent of the blog, really. Writing tips just kind of took over after that. But that will be fixed.

Anyway, if you wanna get jiggy with it, just click on that “follow” button. Unless you are already following, then please don’t click it. Then I would lose you. But I would remember you forever, anyway. Let that guilt trip save you from the dreaded “unfollow” button.

So follow me! Let’s go on a journey together!
